Sunrise/ Sunset

A group I am in, Professional Textile Artists, had a challenge called Sunrise/Sunset.  The rules were pretty simple- we needed to incorporate a black fabric with the design, colors or quilting expressing the theme.   Nine of us made challenge pieces, eight were available to be submitted to American Quilters Society for the "Ultimate Guild Challenge".  We were juried in to the 2011 AQS Quilt Show & Contest in Knoxville and won at 3rd place.

Paducah April 2011

It has been 4 years since I went to the American Quilters Society Quilt Show in Paducah, KY.  So when I learned in March that my quilt "Midwinter Blues" had been accepted, I decided to join some friends and go. What a year to go.  Due to expected flooding in the area, the floodgates were closed and the convention center was unavailable for the quilt show.

These are the floodgates, some of which are attractively painted.

     It is hard to tell the water level of the Ohio River from this angle.

 

 AQS managed to move the quilts and vendors to other locations around town.  Here are some friends waiting outside the Pavilion to see some of the show at Preview Night.  All 3 of us had quilts in the show and they were on display in this structure.

This is my quilt "Midwinter Blues" in the Large Bed Quilt, First Time Entry category.

This is a close-up from my quilt.  Do you see the snowflake quilted in the center?  It is a traditional Hunters Star Block.  There are more than 100 different blue and white fabrics in the quilt.  I really enjoy using a large number of fabrics to convey one color.  Originally it was going to be a lap size piece, but I was having so much fun with the different blue fabrics that it kept growing and depleted my stash of blue fabrics.
